I should explain myself here. You see, when we signed up for our matric
exams way back in 1997, we were presented with the full list of available
subjects. Most of these, such as Knitting & Needlework, Greek Dancing and
the mysterious General Paper, were unheard of at my school. I was most
fascinated by the option of bricklaying. Had my education been compromised
because my school had never informed me that I could write Standard Grade
Bricklaying for my Senior Certificate? I suspected not. I was more
interested in what exactly you would be asked in a matric Bricklaying
Exam. I had to try setting one myself. Inevitably, perhaps, it ended up
being a little tongue-in-cheek. I did most of the work (and I can't claim
all the credit) in Mrs Timme's English class. The final product was rather
popular, and between it and its sequel Standard Grade Painting exam I made
over R100 selling them around the school. The third in the series,
Criminology, was belatedly completed in 2000. I must repeat: all three of
these subjects really are offerred for Senior Certificate by the Western Cape Education
Department.
